Paperback. it has been our aim in a single volume of substantial size an adequare global survey which will be useful for most quick reference purposes for professional and educational users. The cross-referencing of entries should facilitate browsing and enable the reader to explore connections between personalities and topics. It is an important feature of the dictionary that it draws on Chamber's wextensive biographical expertise, supplementing this information with wide-ranging topic entries. Every effot has been made to avoid a purely Eurocentric balance of entries. We have endeavouted to be even-handed between continents and cultures, giving as much or more coverage to matters American as, for example, British.
