Chambers's Supplementary Reader, Selected from Miscellany of Instructive and Entertaining Tracts, Issue 1

Chambers's Supplementary Reader, Selected From Miscellany Of Instructive And Entertaining Tracts, Issue 1. This 19th-century educational miscellany, issued by the Chambers publishing house, gathers short biographical sketches, tales, and poetry intended for young readers. The No. 1 volume features a biographical section on Thomas Cochrane, Earl of Dundonald, chronicling his early life, naval exploits, political struggles, and eventual posthumous restoration of reputation, alongside adventure-filled anecdotes, moral stories, and selections from the poetry of Cowper. Included pieces such as Anecdotes of Dogs and The Goldmakers’ Village present exemplary conduct, loyalty, reform, and virtue through engaging narrative. Cowper’s poetical pieces offer reflections on nature, liberty, and national sentiment, reinforcing ethical and patriotic themes. The compilation blends biography, fiction, and verse to promote reading, moral instruction, and an appreciation of literature, as part of Chambers’ broader educational program, published around 1872 in London and Edinburgh.
