En 1939, un exceptionnel ensemble de portraits du XVIe siècle était donné au musée Condé de Chantilly par la vicomtesse de Montaigne de Poncins. Cette collection avait été réunie aux XIXe siècle par ses ancêtres, les marquis de Biencourt, alors propriétaires du château d'Azay-le-Rideau. Pour la première fois depuis ce don, 36 chefs-d'œuvre restaurés pour l'occasion, quitteront Chantilly pour retrouver les murs du château d'Azay-le-Rideau où ils étaient autrefois admirés.
L'occasion de retrouver les portraits de Charles VII, Charles IX, Catherine de Médicis, Marguerite de Navarre, Anne de Montmorency ou encore d'Henriette de Balzac d'Entragues... dont les auteurs se nomment Jean Fouquet, François Clouet, Jean Decourt ou François Quesnel, les plus grands noms de la peinture française de l'époque.
Conservateur du patrimoine au musée Condé, Mathieu Deldicque fait revivre ici l'art du portrait à la française , mis au point par Jean Clouet et son fils François Clouet, qui allie vérité des traits du modèle et acuité psychologique. Il permet également au lecteur de comprendre le fonctionnement d'un atelier de portraitiste , ainsi que l'usage du portrait à la Renaissance qui pouvait être aussi bien un cadeau diplomatique que destiné à orner une galerie familiale. Alexandra Zvereva, spécialiste de la peinture du XVIe siècle, retrace quant à elle l'histoire de cette collection unique.

About the Author
Mathieu Deldicque est conservateur du patrimoine au musée Condé (Chantilly). Archiviste paléographe, il est un spécialiste de la peinture et de l'enluminure du XIVe au XVIe siècle. En 2019, il fut le commissaire de l'exposition La Joconde nue , consacrée à Léonard de Vinci, au musée Condé.
Docteur en histoire moderne de l'université Paris-Sorbonne, Alexandra Zvereva est actuellement responsable des collections municipales de Saint-Germain en Laye. Spécialiste de la peinture du XVIe siècle, elle a notamment publié Les Clouet de Catherine de Médicis (Somogy), Portraits dessinés de la cour des Valois (Arthena), Le cabinet des Clouet au château de Chantilly (Nicolas Chaudun).
