A Chapter in the History of Meteorites (Classic Reprint)

Explore a pivotal chapter in meteorite science—assembled from 19th-century reports and new analyses.

This text gathers the era’s key observations, discoveries, and classifications to trace how scientists understood meteorites after 1869. It blends biography, mineralogy, and careful documentation into a single, accessible reference.

This edition collects comprehensive digests of memoirs and notices published during the years 1869–75, focusing on meteorites found after 1868 and, in later sections, those found before. It also covers notable falls, newly identified minerals, and the evolving methods researchers used to analyze metallic and silicate components. Rich with plates and woodcuts, the work helps readers see and compare famous specimens from around the world.

• Learn how early researchers tested meteorites and what they learned about their composition, minerals, and occluded gases.
• See descriptions of famous finds and famous winds of discovery, including distinct irons and stony varieties.
• Discover how scientists compared analyses and built a growing picture of meteorite taxonomy.
• Examine visual evidence—from frontispieces to etched surfaces—that helped scientists interpret meteorites’ structures.

Ideal for readers of historical science, mineralogy fans, and anyone curious about how meteorites shaped 19th‑century geology.
