The narrative structure of these romances is frequently difficult to follow, as the action cuts from one character to the next and back again - a conscious technique of interlacing themes (entrelacement) which is used to heighten suspense and engage the reader's attention. The summaries make it easier to track the adventures of a given knight or the recurrence of a particular theme. The name index is keyed to chapters, so can be used with both the summary text in this volume and the full text in the previous volumes.
