Charleston is a city noted for its beauty, its history, and its charm. Thanks to a long history of preservation, places like the Battery, Rainbow Row, the French Quarter, and the Four Corners of Law remain important parts of the city's National Historic Landmark District. Today, residents and visitors share the legacy that is Charleston.
Charleston: An Album from the Collection of The Charleston Museum celebrates the life of the city over several generations, from 1865 to the 1970s, with over 200 images of families at work, at play, on the water, and around the town. Most of the images selected have never been published previously,
therefore the volume offers us an unusually valuable source of information about the city and its inhabitants.
About the Author: Mary Moore Jacoby and John W. Meffert have worked closely with the staff of the first museum in the nation, The Charleston Museum, to create this rich compendium of a city's past. Ms. Jacoby, an antiquarian and the author of The Churches of Charleston, and Mr. Meffert, president of the Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies and former director of the Preservation Society of Charleston, have produced a volume that speaks to the value that the residents of the city place on their authentic history, their rich family life, the continuity of their architectural heritage, and the whimsical nature of life as it has been lived in this city by the sea.
