Our Charlie: A Memorial by Charles Thurber. This memorial, written by a grieving father, gathers a sequence of narratives, poems, and reflections about his son Charlie, who died at age five years and seven months. The work blends childhood recollections, travel and learning, and Christian examples to illustrate a mission-filled life cut short by early death. In two parts, it presents vivid vignettes such as The Young Student, The Statesman and Christian, The Missionary, and The Little Genius, followed by meditations on why the young die, the meaning of affliction, and the hope of heavenly reunion. The second half turns toward spiritual themes, contemplating whether spirits visit the living, the organization of heaven, and the idea that every life has a divine purpose even beyond the grave. Published for private distribution and intended to comfort the afflicted, the book offers a balm of faith in the face of sorrow while urging trust in Providence.
