Chasing the Wind

There will always be time for the historians, the tireless searchers for the truth. They are the diggers who study the letters, diaries, and field orders. They spend countless hours in libraries and universities buried sometimes in unintelligible, often puzzling documents. They ask the painful questions - are we right? Then they find a clue and make some form of interpretation that will stand. They have some degree of success for us to grasp We are thankful. Though this be so, there is still more than most historians, no matter hard they try, cannot do. While history or no-fiction will remain the best, the most inclusive and predominant way to reach our heritage, there is another path. The Civil War - all life is more than just the bareness of events, the moving of armies and people on the chessboard. This is where the writer of historical fiction picks up the banner and creates a glimpse into the personal, the minor acts, the trivia that makes up life, including war.
