The Cheapskate's Guide to Paris: Hotels, Food, Shopping, Day Trips and More

Offers advice for affordable travel in Paris, including suggestions for economizing in lodging, dining, shopping, and sightseeing

If ever a travel guide were mistitled, this is it, since it is hardly designed for the budget-minded tourist. Emerson (The Cheapskate's Guide to London, LJ 10/1/95) first points out the overwhelming priceyness of Parisian hotels, restaurants, clubs, and local tours before offering suggestions for economizing without sacrificing high quality. Her cost-cutting suggestions for accommodations include traveling off-season and using coupons and special promotions. The hotels she cites, however, are still out of reach for most. Go straight to the shopping and sightseeing sections; her advice there is well taken and makes the rest of Paris affordable. Her tips on packing, traveling with children, motoring, and senior-citizen deals are all sound. The truly economical traveler must look elsewhere for information on affordable travel to Paris.?Ann E.
