One of the greatest legacies of the Depression was the government-sponsored effort (through the WPA and the Library of Congress) to locate, capture, preserve, and celebrate American regional culture -- particularly American folk song. The most tireless work on this came from the Lomax family, spearheaded by the father and son team of John and Alan Lomax. Touring hither and yon with a state-of-the-art, 315 pound acetate, phonograph disc recorder in the trunk of their Ford, they found music in chain gangs, on front porches, in fields, and in taverns. However, others were on the hunt as well, and the Foreword credits many folklorists, including Zora Neale Hurston, Seamus Doyle, and Charles Seeger.
