About this Item

The booklet provides a brief summary of the human clinical trials conducted at the Bristol Royal Infirmary at the University of Bristol in England, under the control of Dr. Todd, to study the effects of lead selenide as a chemotherapy treatment in those with "advance cancer patients who were hopeless for any other form of treatment". There were two phases of the trial, first with 12 cases, and the second with 44 cases. At the end it was concluded that they had "definite proof that it is a useful treatment, and by no means a cure for cancer, but still a treatment which appears to prolong life and often markedly relieves the pain of advanced cancer. If reasonable care is taken there is very little danger in the treatment." The booklet includes several excerpts from case histories, examples of "untoward symptoms" due to the use of lead, and instruction on administration and dosage. At the end is a note titled "in the interest of humanity", which basically states that the Bristol Royal Infirmary is deriving no profit from the publication of the booklet, and the drug is being offered at a "fair price" by the British Drug House Limited with the "amount of profit made by them is less than usual". Also included is post card so one can request a copy of 'Chemotherapeutic Researches on Cancer' a book also by the Bristol Royal Infirmary and/or a price quote on the drug, Colloid Lead Selenide. 8 pgs.
