1890. No edition remarks. 544 pages. No dust jacket. Pictorial cloth covered boards. Black and white diagrams. Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Cracking to front hinge with netting exposed. Binding loose. Pen and pencil inscriptions to front free endpaper. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces tanned and sunned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front. Book has strong forward lean. Boards are slightly bowed. Seller Inventory # 1727332716IEV

Red cloth boards, with gilt chessboard on front cover and gilt titling. Covers somewhat worn and rubbed, some white splashes to back cover, spine faded, contents slightly shaken, endpapers browned, some dust and fingerprint staining to page fore edges, but overall a vg reading copy for its age. 544pp. An easy introduction (still useful today) to chess by maestro and world champion Howard Staunton (1810-74), inventor of the world renowned Staunton chess service.
