A handy and concise guide to letter-writing based on mid-nineteenth-century standards. This guide provides informative but brief descriptions about how to write proper letters based on the occasion. For example, the author notes how tact are both required in business and friendly (informal) letters but that business letters are governed by brevity and stating one's point immediately while friendly letters should not be too formal unless a dispute has occurred. The author also offers advice on general structure of the letter (for example, write about the most important point first and then proceed to write about subject matter in order of descending importance) and the need for proper spelling, capitalization, and grammar. Several examples of letters of given on what to do and what not to do in terms of writing a letter. Advice for other letters are included such as complimentary notes and family epistolary correspondence.
