Chicago's River at Work and at Play

A unique look at the Chicago River, yesterday, today and tomorrow, the book includes interviews with key individuals who are intimately aware of the history of the river as well as the several contemporary and future issues of this unique body of water. In 192 pages with 140 spectacular color and black and white photographs, the reader will be able to understand the Chicago River throughout its history and what are the particular challenges it faces in the future.

The key elements of the book include a Preface by former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, a Foreword by Lynn Osmond, President, Chicago Architecture Foundation, and an Introduction by Gary Johnson, President, Chicago History Museum. In addition to these essays and photographic history of the Chicago River, the reader has a special opportunity to go on the Chicago Architecture Foundation's River Tour presented by two experienced CAF docents and accompanied by outstanding color photographs of buildings described on the tour. Then, one will learn, in detail, the issues challenging the future of the river, and the plans to continue building the beautiful Riverwalk.

Neal Samors, a Chicago native, is an award-winning author, co-author and independent publisher of twenty-two books about Chicago, its neighborhoods, downtown, Lake Shore Drive, North Michigan Avenue, and the Chicago River. His books include Chicago's Classic Restaurants, Downtown Chicago in Transition, The Rise of The Magnificent Mile, Chicago's Far North Side, The Old Chicago Neighborhood, Chicago in the Fifties, and Chicago in the Sixties. In addition to these and other publications, he has been the publisher of Chicago From The Sky by Lawrence Okrent, Uptown: Portrait of a Chicago Neighborhood in the Mid-1970s by Robert Rehak, Never Put Ketchup On A Hot Dog by Bob Schwartz, and Native American Trail Marker Trees by Dennis Downes. His books have won three Independent Publisher Awards in History along with several Illinois State Historical Society awards.

Steven Dahlman is a professional photographer in downtown Chicago who specializes in architecture. His photography has appeared in magazines, newspapers, annual reports, books, web sites, trade shows, gallery exhibitions, and one television news set. He has 36 years experience as a professional journalist. He was a radio news director, reporter, and anchor for more than a dozen stations and networkds. From 1984 to 1990, he was a regular contributor to ABC Radio Networks. He is currently editor of Loop North News and Marina City Online, web sites serving news and information to the Loop and River North neighborhoods of downtown Chicago.
