"Child-Library Readers: Primer" is a foundational educational text designed to introduce young children to the mechanics and joys of reading. Compiled by literacy experts William H. Elson and Lura E. Runkel, this primer features a carefully curated collection of simple stories, rhythmic verses, and engaging dialogues specifically tailored for the earliest stages of language acquisition. The work emphasizes high-frequency vocabulary and repetitive sentence structures to help budding readers build confidence and fluency.

The book includes a variety of themes ranging from animal fables to domestic scenes and nature studies, all accompanied by the expressive illustrations of L. Kate Deal. These visuals not only aid in comprehension but also bring to life the gentle, wholesome narratives that define early 20th-century primary education. As a classic example of the Elson-Runkel method, this primer focuses on developing a child's imagination while systematically strengthening their phonetic and word-recognition skills. This volume remains an important historical piece of pedagogical literature, illustrating the evolution of elementary reading curricula and the enduring power of simple, narrative-driven instruction.
