The Union chapel was formed as a result of a small group of Anglicans leaving the parish church of St Mary's to worship with non-conformists. In 1806, their own chapel was built in Compton Terrace and called the Union Chapel. The minister from 1804 to 1852 was Thomas Lewis. Eventually the Anglican part of the congregation declined and it became a Congregational chapel.
