The Chimebound: A Story of Unfinished Decisions

The bell rang at midnight, and the world pretended it hadn't.

In Greyhaven, that is simply how things are done. The clock tower has been frozen at 11:47 for sixteen years. Streets rearrange themselves overnight. Water falls upward in the market square, and no one looks. The town has survived by agreeing, quietly and completely, not to notice.

Sixteen-year-old Aarav has never questioned it until the night a bell rings in an abandoned observatory and something vast turns its attention toward him.

What he learns is worse than a haunting. Greyhaven is a valve. The wrongness leaking through its streets is pressure, deliberately routed here so that other places can stay ordinary. His parents built the system that does it. They are not dead, as he was told. They are inside it, holding it shut, and they have been for as long as he has been alive.

Now the containment is failing, and everyone who understands why wants something different from him. A woman who has spent fifteen years managing the damage and calls it mercy. A man who believes collapse is the only honest cure, and who is never once wrong in a way that is easy to dismiss. And a system that hates no one it simply optimizes, which turns out to be worse.

Every option costs lives. Every truth serves someone. And the only person who can reach the heart of it is a boy nobody was ever supposed to notice.

Aarav will have to decide what he is willing to lose and whether some things were never meant to be finished.
