From 1964 until the build up of the Cultural Revolution, climaxed by the birth of the Red Guards (1967), Mackerras and Hunter taught in Beijing and Shanghai, respectively under contract to the Chinese government. Both men could speak, read and write Chinese and specialized in Chinese studies at University. Their observations cover the family, life in cities and on communes, education, the role of foreigners and China's attitude to the rest of the world. Softcover, 185 pp. Light wear with faded spine, no owner names or gift notes, text is lightly age-toned otherwise unmarked, tight binding.
