China’s Peril and Promise is an advanced Chinese reader in two volumes for students who want to enhance their understanding of modern China in general and modern Chinese literature and intellectuals in particular. The selections―which span the twentieth century and include essays, short stories, biographies, and criticism―expose students not only to a variety of modern Chinese literary genres but also to some of the major substantive issues that modern Chinese intellectuals have faced. This volume of China’s Peril and Promise contains the readings. The companion volume provides the vocabulary and grammar notes.

About the Author

Chih-p'ing Chou is professor of East Asian studies at Princeton University and director of the university's Chinese language and Princeton in Beijing programs. Xuedong Wang is a lecturer in Chinese at Princeton University. Joanne Chiang is a senior lecturer in Chinese at Washington University in St. Louis.

Orders usually ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 lbs or less, or 1 kg. Heavy or oversized books may require additional shipping charges.

Standard Shipping orders will be delivered via UPS Ground and USPS Media Mail, typically 2-5 business days for in-stock items. In-stock items will generally ship by the next business day.

Please note: While the overwhelming majority of packages shipped via USPS Media Mail arrive within the time specified above, in rare cases shipments can take up to 3 to 5 weeks to arrive.
