然而，她的個人生活卻令人氣結：她的婚姻是"父母之命"。接受邱璋采訪時，嵗的她直言不諱地說，她從來沒愛過她的丈夫，只是因爲不願讓父母不快，她接受了這門親事。不僅如此，婚姻中的她，對丈夫以"老爺"相稱，以"照顧老爺"為己任，"老爺"的話就是聖旨，心中再不樂意也要立即執行。她不僅承擔一般家務，甚至還要做修剪草坪、鏟雪這些按當時的理念應該是男人的工作，乃至引起鄰居抗議。而她"老爺"的回應，則更令人瞠目：下次你做這些事情的時候，我先提前出去，免得讓他們說閑話......

不得不承認，讀到這些令我心中非常難受。王詳明對婚姻的不滿毫不隱瞞，但她從來沒有嘗試過改變--至少她沒有説出來。我們也沒法用"怒其不爭"來評論她，因爲她所作的更像是自覺自願的選擇。儘管她接受過完整的西式現代教育，長時期生活在美國，她的底色還是傳統中國陳腐的"三從四德"，而且她已然將其内化為行爲準則，似乎她的世界裏，這是唯一的婚姻生活方式。

能找到的唯一理由，就是她母親的影響。她母親的經歷更令人扼腕：知書識禮、當過小學教員的她，嫁到夫家后，被婆婆將筆墨紙硯燒掉，每日被迫充當僕佣照顧家人起居，吃飯不能上桌，甚至生下的第一個孩子因爲是女孩，被婆婆活活打死。這一切她都逆來順受，沒有半點反抗。王詳明很愛她的母親，為母親鳴不平，但母親的逆來順受，給她的影響應該是巨大的。

王詳明的一生，爲我們提供了民國知識女性的另一種樣板。不知道這樣的女性有多少，或許更多有相同經歷的人選擇了沉默。要感謝王詳明的直言不諱，和邱彰救火式的記錄，才讓我們看到這樣的人生。或許中國與西方、傳統與現代的夾擊，令她在個人生活上選擇了更爲熟悉也更爲安全的傳統中國，儘管職場上的她與所在環境已完美融合。她的一生，能給今天的華裔美國女性帶來什么樣的啓示呢？
