The author shows us how for centuries the lantern is a symbol of happiness, kindliness and hospitality in welcoming guest, and the many other events they are used such as weddings, funerals, etc. This book recounts her trip to China, during which she took pains to meet with women of various levels of influence and education and to describe how the role of women in Chinese society was changing, and where she felt reforms were needed. Grace Thompson Seton (b. 1872) was the author of many travel books, several of which recounted her adventures hunting big game, fishing, and collecting specimens in the American and Canadian West with her naturalist husband Ernest Thompson. Later, she became an advocate for women's rights and traveled internationally to learn about the condition of women abroad.
