Item description from seller

Vertical paper scroll showing four charming Chinese sages in their robes each against a background of one of the following four Chinese characters ???? 134.5 x 38.3cm. Paper browned and foxed, light tide marks upper right corner and in places on right edge, not affecting image. Some previous sellotape marks at lower edge. Repairs with washi archival paper at edges on reverse. Although showing many signs of age and wear, it is still a delightful scroll. The inscription behind the gentlemen, ????, refers to the need to study the classics, the Confucian Books of Poetry and History, to live ethically in the world. A delightful addition to a scholarly study.
