The Chinese, while often perplexed at the interest expressed by the foreign enthusiasts, were generally welcoming and allowed access to industrial premises and linesides across the vast country. The locations ranged from the far western deserts of Xinjiang to the industrial heartlands of Manchuria with excursions into central China and the Mongolian Autonomous Region. About the Author

David Kitching is a former Countryside Management Officer with a lifetime interest in industrial history. Since retiring he has been researching the history of the North Staffordshire brick industry and helped develop brick displays at the Apedale Heritage Centre at Newcastle-under-Lyme. He has previously written about the coal industry in Staffordshire and Cheshire.
