Synopsis:

Chip is dog-crazy. All he ever thinks about is dogs. All he ever talks about is dogs. If Chip had a dog he would teach it to sit stay, fetch, and rollover. He would love it, and it would be his best friend. But Chip's parents do not want a dog. His mother is a "cat person," and his father has the usual concerns. Poor Chip. He resigns himself to his sad fate, until one night he dreams up the perfect solution to his dog problem.

Reviews: PreS-Gr. 2. Wegman has made a name for himself photographing Weimaraners as dog-faced humans. In his latest picture book, Chip, a young Weimaraner dressed as a boy, is obsessed with dogs. He wants a dog to play with more than anything. In his imagination, he teaches his dream pet to sit, stay, fetch, and roll over (his pretend friend is a stuffed toy Weimaraner). Chip's parents do not want a dog. His mom (a dog wearing a platinum blond wig and sneakers) is a "cat person," and his dad argues that dogs are a big responsibility. In one hilariously staged breakfast scene, the three sit around a table, expressionless: "There is nothing more to discuss." One day, after a vivid dream, Chip realizes that he is actually a dog and therefore doesn't need one: "He took himself for a walk, taught himself new tricks, and gave himself a bone." This offbeat story turns the "child wants dog" story on its head and is sure to generate giggles from both kids and adults. Karin Snelson
