Harrison's classic work of essays and lectures on the subject. Maroon boards in very clean condition, gilt titles to spine. 447 pages, clean throughout; four page Macmillan Catalogue to rear. Untrimmed edges (as was the style), no inscription. The fourth reprint of the 1886 First Edition. Front paste-down (slightly marked) has the heraldic bookplate of Gervase Beckett (1866-1937), 1st Baron Beckett of Kirkdale Manor, Yorkshire. Beckett was a banker and sometime MP for Whitby and Leeds (North). He had a military association with the Green Howards. He married into the Duncombe family of Helmsley and one of his four daughters married Anthony Eden. The heraldic motto translates as "To be of advantage to my fellow citizens".
