Christian Sympathy: a Collection of Letters Addressed to Mourners

Christian Sympathy: A Collection Of Letters Addressed To Mourners. This volume is an anthology of devotional letters compiled to comfort mourners in times of loss through Christian faith. It opens with an Introduction explaining that the letters, drawn from various clergymen and laypersons, are chosen to provide practical consolation rather than new theory, guiding readers toward Christ as Refuge in affliction and toward adoption as God’s children. The contents consist of numerous letters addressed to widows, bereaved parents, and friends, interwoven with Scriptural reflections, prayers, and pastoral exhortations. Topics include the nature of suffering, the discipline of chastisement, resignation to Providence, and the hope of eternal life, often illustrated with biblical passages and references to divine faithfulness. The collection also includes excerpts from sermons, devotional prayers, and poems and hymns on death and perseverance. Overall, it aims to sustain faith, cultivate patience, and comfort mourners by presenting faith-based perspectives on grief and divine care during sorrow.
