Christian Unity Doctrinally and Historically Considered, in 8 Sermons Preached at the Lect. Founded by J. Bampton

Christian Unity Doctrinally And Historically Considered, In 8 Sermons Preached Before The University of Oxford, In the Year MDCCCXVI, by John Hume Spry. This volume gathers eight sermons preached at Oxford on the subject of Christian unity, exploring the nature of unity among believers, the essential elements of Christian faith, and the proper form of church government. Spry argues that the unity Jesus prayed for is rooted in a common faith, a shared life in Christ, and a stable ecclesiastical order, particularly defending the episcopal structure of the Church of England. He examines the role of the Christian priesthood as an instrument of unity, the relationship between doctrine and worship, and the dangers of schism and disunion. The work analyzes historical Church practice, the authority of apostolic succession, the value of liturgy and sacraments as unifying means, and the prospects of universal Christian unity grounded in apostolic tradition. It is a rigorous defence of Anglican ecclesiology and church governance.
