xvi + 634 pp. Brown cloth, gilt titles. 115 engravings. Complete in one volume. Includes a Life of the Author, an Essay on his Works, and a Criticism on his History, with an Original Introductory Essay on the Character and Society of the Middle Ages, by John Lord, LL.D. Binding mildly worn at corners; head of spine has a 1 inch tear in the cloth. Endpapers very mildly foxed, not affecting text pages. Front hinge solid but endpaper split; back hinge solid, but last signature starting between pp 632 and 633 (still holding well). Text block clean and bright. Small waterstain on lower corner of back endpaper only, not affecting binding or text block. This is a remarkably compact edition of the Chronicles, being one volume instead of twelve! Text is in two columns, clear and readable. Johnes's translation holds up very well today for thoroughness and readability.
