First US edition printed from the plates of London publisher Grant Richards. Large 8vo, fine pebbled black cloth, gilt device front and gilt titles spine, xxi, 375. Tipped-in at fly is 2-page ALS dated October 24, (19)09 from Wm F. Biddle of Philadelphia to Rev. H.S. Kirk of Baltimore presenting the true identity of de Corvo and revealing his full name as Frederick William Serafino Austin Lewis Mary Rolfe. De Corvo (1860 - 1913), was an English writer, artist, photographer and eccentric. He is known for the novel Hadrian the Seventh. Solid binding, some spotting here and there, largely confined to prelims and rears. With the book plate of Baron Wraxall of Clyst St George in the County of Devon, a peerage created in 1928 for the Conservative politician George Gibbs.
