An exceedingly rare publisher's binding of Chums: An illustrated Paper of Boys dated 1893 on spine and 1894 on title page. Publisher's original binding of red cloth titled and decorated in black, brown and gilt on spine and cover, and in blind on back cover, beveled edges. Contains an index, a large fold-out poster, and the complete 52 issues [832 pps.] of Volume II No. 51-102 [August 30, 1893 - August 22, 1894]. A large 305 X 230 mms, one penny cover price, weekly 16 page British boys storypaper. Interestingly contains "Mr. Rider Haggard at Home. He Sends us a Message", an article by Lord Montmorres that includes a photograph of Haggard on pg. 217. Half of the article consists of Haggard's remarks in his own words, and is unrecorded in the bibliographies. [Not related to a similarly titled article by Frederick Dolman in the periodical Black and White.] Good. Sunned spine with loss of gilt, damaged and repaired at heel. Worn boards with some soil and curled tips. Cracked hinges, torn and tape repaired f.f.e. Interior newspapers in VG+ condition with tan pages to brown pages. Issues 51-75 in order,; followed by issues 102-76 in reverse order.
