Bowden explicates the dramatic juxtapositions resulting from two powerful and opposing definitions of history: objectivity vs. faith; naturalism vs. providential activity; science vs. theology. As the decades passed, the theological position gradually lost its appeal, allowing scientific ideals to prevail.
