Reviews
Gr. 1-3. These books from the Holiday Celebrations series offer balanced presentations of basic information and colorful pictures. A typical double-page spread includes a full-page photograph on one page and a paragraph of text on the other. The print is fairly large, but many first- and second-graders will find the vocabulary beyond their reading levels. Read aloud, though, the texts are informative and understandable. Arbor Day explains how people observe the holiday, when they celebrate it, who originated it, and what importance trees have in the environment. Cinco de Mayo tells of the Mexican military victory over the French that the holiday commemorates, and also discusses the parades, music, dancing, foods, games, and parties to be found in Mexico and the U.S. each year on the fifth of May. Each book ends with a short glossary and very brief lists of recommended books and Web sites. The clear photos and clean book design make these attractive introductions to the holidays.
