The Circle and the Cross (Paperback or Softback)

The Circle and the Cross is an exhaustive scholarly investigation into the archaeological and historical evolution of sacred spaces in early Britain. In this second volume, A. Hadrian Allcroft continues his exploration of the transition from pre-Christian circular earthworks to the established structures of the Christian faith. The work centers on the fascinating hypothesis of continuity between pagan sites and the later development of the church, arguing that the ancient 'circle' fundamentally influenced the eventual placement and form of the 'cross.'

Drawing upon extensive field research, Allcroft analyzes burial mounds, henges, and the architectural remains of early ecclesiastical buildings to illustrate how religious practices were adapted over centuries. This volume provides a detailed look at the cultural and spiritual landscape of the British Isles, bridging the gap between prehistoric ritual and medieval history. It remains a significant contribution to the study of topography and the enduring legacy of ancient traditions within the Christian framework. Readers interested in the intersection of archaeology and religious development will find this a meticulous and insightful study of the origins of the British parish and its sacred heritage.
