Reviews
YA. A down-to-earth view of the formation and workings of an ethnic book club. Neblett's dual purpose is to celebrate the love of reading and promote minority writers. The author shares firsthand pointers and precautions while encouraging groups to pursue their own creativity. She talks directly to readers, especially neophytes, in an easy-to-read style. She begins with tips on starting a group and the logistics of meeting. The next chapter gives sensible advice about choosing titles, followed by a section on the essentials of facilitating discussion. Handling author appearances and the art of book collecting are also addressed. The appendixes include a listing of multicultural titles, a register of book discussion groups, and awards. There is also a record of African-American literary societies of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The points made will be applicable to those meeting in dormitories, on the Net, or in a school discussion program. Reading is a solitary act; this title gives all the necessary ingredients to make it a truly enjoyable social event.?Connie Freeman, Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, IN
