Max and his grandfather visit the circus, where they see every aspect from putting up the Big Top to spending the night in the manager's trailer.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A story chronicling circus people erecting a Big Top and preparing for a performance of a modern-day tent circus that moves from town to town. While walking around the circus grounds, Grandpa Sam (a past ringmaster) explains to his grandson what the machines and people are doing. The hustle and bustle of activity and the exciting circus atmosphere are not conveyed by either the text or the lighthearted pen-and-watercolor illustrations. The picture-book format often includes two or three separate illustrations with blocks of text placed on each page, giving the book a somewhat cluttered appearance and making it more suitable for individual reading than group use.
