New technologies and data analytics have become critical tools for cities as they seek to tackle urgent challenges such as growing populations, social inequality and climate change. Advances in digital devices, AI and IoT are boosting efficiencies in areas such as public health, water and waste management and sustainable construction.
Yet technologies are rarely a quick fix to urban problems, and the trade-offs involved with ICTs are putting increasing pressure on cities. As they collect more data, cities are more frequently becoming the targets of cyberattacks; privacy concerns and citizen pushback against some technologies are on the rise; and the growing chasm between those who have access to new technologies and those who do not – the digital divide – threatens to magnify social inequalities.
