[Civil Rights] [African-Americana]. Original press photo. Civil rights activists retrace footsteps of the late Dr. Martin Luther King during his 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery. Apriil 15, 1972. 11" x 8" inches. These activists in Selma had their permit denied for this demonstration by white mayor Joe Smitherman, but the decision was appealed up to a federal court, where a judge approved of the march. Smitherman had a long record of antagonism towards King but his ability to restrict their freedom of speech changed along with the times. Several of the men in the front row look over at the camera stiffly. This Associated Press photo has a descriptive caption attached. It has a margin and inscriptions on verso that is typical of photos that were used in newspapers. Has a crease from the middle of the left edge almost to the bottom right corner but otherwise in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 17381
