Le gouvernement fran�ais, comprenant de quel prix serait pour les artistes comme pour les historiens la connaissance des monuments de l'inde, a bien-voulu nous confier la mission d'aller les �tudier sur place. Cinq volumes, comprenant plus de 400 planches accompagn�es d'un texte explicatif, ont �t� le r�sultat de notre mission. Ces documents se trouvent en partie reproduits dans cet ouvrage.

C'est en nous appuyant surtout sur l'�tude des monuments que nous avons pu donner une base solide a notre Histoire des Civilisations de l'inde. Nous avons visit� tous les �difices importants de la p�ninsule, y compris ceux des r�gions les moins explor�es, telles que le myst�rieux N�pal, o� aucun Fran�ais n'avait p�n�tr� encore. Nos observations nous ont permis d'�clairer d'un jour enti�rement nouveau des points, tout a fait obscurs jusqu'ici, de la civilisation et de l'histoire religieuse des Hindous. Pour n'en citer qu'un exemple, c'est gr�ce a l'�tude des monuments que nous avons pu montrer que le bouddhisme, dont les savants europ�ens avaient voulu faire une reli gion sans divinit�s, en se basant sur des �crits de sectes philosophiques post�rieurs de six si�cles � Bouddha, fut au contraire le plus polyth�iste de tous les cultes. C'est gr�ce a eux aussi que nous avons mis en �vidence la fa�on dont cette religion a disparu du pays m�me qui l'avait vue na�tre, probl�me dont la solution avait �t� vainement cherch�e par tous les savants qui l'avaient abord�.
