A Modern Library edition presenting Jacob Burckhardt's look at the "colorful period of Italian life and thought between 1350 and 1550." With details about the arts, fashions, manners and thought of the period. The Swiss-born author first published this work in 1860. It was commended for its treatment of the Renaissance period and social aspects of daily life. Translated by S. G. C. Middlemore, and with an introduction by Hajo Holborn. Volume wrapped in dust jacket with image of a Renaissance-era bridge crossing an Italian river. --- In Toledano spine 8 / red cloth / gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks / black topstain / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style i, verso lists 379 titles in ML catalog. Likely published c.1957 (though 1954 date appears in book). ML #32.4. --- A very well-preserved copy: bright and tightly-bound but with faint penciled notes to last page.
