In the Clap Shack

Price-Clipped. "William Styron's first play is a comedy-drama set in the VD ward of a Navy hospital during World War II. Wallace Magruder had a problem. Young, innocent, confused, he was brought into the Urological Ward with a 'Stratospheric"-to use Dr. Glanz's word-Wassermann. The vicious practical jokes and personal antagonisms of the men in the ward dismay the young Magruder. But he is driven to desperation by the sanctimonious and secretly salacious Dr. Glanz, who revels in sexual case histories and plays on Magruder's consternation and sense of betrayal for having been unfaithful to his high school sweetheart. By turns ribald, funny and poignant, 'In the Clap Shack' dramatizes the foibles, follies and fortitude of the human animal." ILLUSTRATED in black-and-white photography with accompanying descriptive captions. 96 pages. LF.
