Gr. 4-6. As the series title implies, each book in the Classifying Living Things does just that. Books begin with a double-page spread that looks at the idea of classification as applied to biological groups and the reason for scientific as well as common names. Mammals discusses which characteristics are shared by animals in this classification, then lists the 21 orders of mammals, the number of species in each, and one or more representatives from each order. The remainder of the book consists of two-page spreads that discuss orders such as marsupials, rodents, and primates. These discussions offer pertinent information, but they sometimes include side issues and factoids that seem beside the point. The text ends abruptly. Generally, each page includes one clear, color photograph of an animal. Birds employs a similar format. Following two useful, double-page spreads presenting feathers and flight, the discussion moves on to orders such as perching birds, flightless birds, and birds of prey. Each volume ends with a glossary and a short bibliography. Carolyn Phelan
