Clavis Calendaria: Or, a Compendious Analysis of the Calendar, Illustrated With Ecclesiastical, Historical, and Classical Anecdotes

Clavis Calendaria: Or, A Compendious Analysis Of The Calendar, Illustrated With Ecclesiastical, Historical, And Classical Anecdotes by John Brady. This two-volume work, originally published in 1815, surveys the history and science of time, calendars, and timekeeping across cultures. Brady opens with reflections on Time, the development of time-measuring instruments from ancient sundials to mechanical clocks, and the evolution of calendar systems from Alban and Roman calendars through Numa, Intercalations, Julian and Gregorian reforms. The text blends technical explanation of calendars, almanacs, ephemerides, and time-keeping devices with broad historical, ecclesiastical, and classical anecdotes about festivals, saints, and astronomical phenomena. It discusses the social and legal significance of calendars, the differences between calendar and almanac, and the adoption of the Gregorian reform in Britain, interwoven with critical commentary on past practices, such as the French Republican calendar. Overall, the work treats the calendar as a national register of time and a vehicle for instruction, amusement, and moral reflection, linking chronology to religion, law, and everyday life.
