Clavis Calendaria; Or, a Compendious Analysis of the Calendar Volume 1

Clavis Calendaria; Or, A Compendious Analysis Of The Calendar by John Brady. This work presents a comprehensive, reference-style survey of time, chronology, and the calendar. It traces the history of timekeeping from primitive sundials and clepsydrae to pendulums and watches, and surveys the development of calendars from Alban and Roman beginnings through the Gregorian reform. The text intertwines scientific, ecclesiastical, and cultural dimensions, detailing the structure of time (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years), the evolution of calendar systems (Roman, Greek, Egyptian), and the mechanisms used to measure time (sun dials, water clocks, hourglasses, clocks, and watches). Brady explicates the intercalation rules, the creation of calendars and almanacs, and the relationships between civil, religious, and astronomical reckonings. The work also contextualizes calendaric knowledge within the history of English religious and social practices, including the computation of Easter and other movable feasts, medieval and early modern reform efforts, and the broader cultural implications of timekeeping. The volume blends scholarly rigor with accessible historical narrative.
