Clematis for Small Spaces

Clematis have long enjoyed popularity among gardeners and now, with the arrival of a new generation of cultivars that excel in small garden situations, there is more reason than ever to grow them. As well as being modest in height, many of the new and classic clematis are self-supporting and extremely floriferous, making them ideal for mixed border and container cultivation. In recent years international nurseryman Raymond J. Evison has championed these compact and highly rewarding cultivars. Recognizing that minimal spaces require clematis of maximum impact, he highlights a selection of high-performance, disease-resistant clematis that flower freely over a long period. He recommends the best clematis for particular situations such as containers, mixed borders, patios, deck gardens, hanging baskets and balconies, and goes on to provide detailed plant descriptions organized by flowering season. Clematis naturally associate well with a variety of other plants and the author discusses suitable companion plants, explaining how to achieve a compatible mix of colour, shape, and form. This comprehensive reference contains easy-to-follow advice on caring for container-grown plants, pruning the different types of clematis the simple way, providing crucial shade to root systems, propagation techniques, combatting pests and diseases, and much more. Beautifully illustrated with 150 colour photos, this long-awaited book will appeal to everyone from seasoned experts to gardeners discovering clematis for the very first time.…
