Clotilde: Or, The Secret Of Three Generations by Alexandre De Pontmartin. A frame narrative set in 18th- and 19th-century France follows the secret vendetta of Clotilde de Varni, whose oath extends across three generations, shaping marriages, betrayals, and murders from Avignon to Paris and into the revolutionary era. The tale centers on a notary, Calixte Ermel, who compiles the memoirs of the families—Varni, D'Arrioules, Ermel—while the doomed romance between Clotilde's lineage and Gaston de Tervaz weaves through a tapestry of passion, greed, and vengeance. The narrative unfolds through dramatic episodes: the portrait and the oath of Hyres; clandestine meetings at the pavilion of Mignard; the Rhone floods; arrests and trials during the Varennes episode; and the long shadow of a will that binds heirs for ninety years. The drama culminates in a posthumous revelation of motives, fortunes, and the cost of vengeance, challenging notions of power, memory, and forgiveness.
