Stateful applications should not feel impossible just because you are new to distributed systems.
If terms like Durable Objects, WebSockets, SQLite, queues, concurrency, and state management sound intimidating, Cloudflare Durable Objects for Stateful Systems gives you a clear, practical path forward.
Designed for readers who are new to Cloudflare Durable Objects, this book starts with the fundamentals and builds your confidence step by step. You will learn not only how the APIs work, but why architectural decisions matter and how to turn them into reliable, real-world TypeScript applications.
Instead of overwhelming you with theory or giant blocks of unexplained code, the book introduces concepts in manageable stages. Mistakes, retries, failures, and trade-offs are treated as a natural part of learning, helping you understand each small win before moving on to more advanced systems.
Key Features
- Friendly, practical introduction to Durable Objects and stateful serverless architecture
- Step-by-step TypeScript examples with clear explanations
- Hands-on patterns for real-time rooms, reservations, messaging, background work, and AI agents
- Production-focused coverage of security, reliability, observability, performance, and cost
- Practical guidance for deployment, migrations, incident diagnosis, rollbacks, and scaling
What You Will Learn
- Design state ownership, object identity, and coordination boundaries
- Store structured persistent data with SQLite
- Handle concurrency, transactions, idempotency, deduplication, and safe retries
- Build authenticated real-time applications with WebSockets and hibernation
- Use alarms and Cloudflare Queues for event-driven workflows
- Scale applications across multiple Durable Objects and manage hot objects
- Build secure multi-tenant systems with authentication and authorization
- Test, monitor, optimize, and operate stateful applications in production
- Create stateful edge AI agents with durable sessions, tools, approvals, and background work

This book is for developers, students, self-learners, and backend or full-stack engineers who are new to Cloudflare Durable Objects and want a practical route from fundamentals to production. No previous Durable Objects or advanced distributed-systems experience is required. Basic familiarity with TypeScript, HTTP APIs, asynchronous programming, and databases will help you get the most from the examples.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
