About this Item
N.d., circa 1910, and most definitely pre-Prohibition. 152 pp. We count 145 different cocktail recipes, which are placed by the tab of the first letter of the cocktail name. The book itself is a commercially sold record book such as might have been used to keep addresses. The recipes are written mostly in ink, with some alternatively written in pencil. There are both common cocktails, although we are not in a position to judge the typicality of their recipes, and some cocktails whose names are new to us, although perhaps they were more common than we are aware of, or the cocktail is better known today by a different name. Among the cocktails we would note, for a variety of reasons, are the absinthe cocktail, the Alexander, the Astoria Coktail, the American Beauty, Between the Sheets, the Bamboo Cocktail, the Brandy Daisy, the Blue Moon Cocktail, the Bobbin Burns (?) Cocktail, the Blackstone Cocktail, the Clover Club Cocktail, the Cooperstown Cocktail, the Fedora Cocktail, the Harvard Cocktail, the Yale Cocktail, the Princeton Cocktail, the Floradora Cooler, the Jack Rose Cocktail, the Love Cocktail, the Perfect Cocktail, the Ramos Gin Fizz, the Stratosphere, the Sunshine Fizz, the Widow's Dream, Ward 8, and the Zazarac Cocktail. On FFEP, ownership inscription of a Charles A. Zeug, 219 E. 88th Street, New York. Based on the similarity of the handwriting in the inscription with that in the recipes, we believe Mr. Zeug was the creator of the manuscript as well. Condition: leatherette somewhat dry, with mild blistering of the surface, and partial separation of endpapers that were attached. A few leaves were torn out, but no obvious loss of content. The lined leaves are heavily age toned, and some tiny closed tears along leaf edges.
