Le parcours hors du commun de Judith Scott
Née en 1943 dans l’Ohio, Judith Scott est atteinte de trisomie 21 et de surdité. Dans l’Amérique des années 1950, son handicap est mal compris : jugée « inapte », elle est séparée de sa famille et surtout de sa sœur jumelle, Joyce, avec qui elle entretenait un lien profond malgré l’absence de langage verbal commun. Commence alors pour Judith une longue période d’institutionnalisation, loin des siens.
Trente-cinq ans plus tard, Joyce parvient à obtenir la tutelle de sa sœur et lui offre une nouvelle vie. Installée à Oakland, Judith rejoint le Creative Growth Art Center. C’est là, à 44 ans, qu’elle découvre la sculpture textile : des objets enveloppés de fils, des formes mystérieuses et organiques qui deviennent son mode d’expression privilégié. À travers ces œuvres singulières, Judith tisse un langage propre, intime, presque thérapeutique, et se reconnecte peu à peu au monde. Aujourd’hui, elle est reconnue comme une figure majeure de l’Art Brut.
Basée sur une documentation riche, cette biographie retrace le destin exceptionnel de Judith Scott (1943-2005). De l’enfance brisée à l’émergence de son œuvre, elle interroge notre rapport à la différence, à la création et à l’inclusion. Préfacé par Lucienne Peiry, historienne de l’art et ancienne directrice de la Collection de l’Art Brut à Lausanne, ce roman graphique bouleversant signé Natacha Sicaud et Alexandre de Moté nous invite à regarder autrement l’art et le handicap.

About the Author
Diplômé de l’ERG (École de Recherche Graphique, Bruxelles) en 2004, Alexandre De Moté participe ensuite à plusieurs expositions en Belgique («Par la bande», «Usage externe») et en France («Paris province ; Bruxelles capitale», centre Wallonie Bruxelles…). En 2006, il rejoint le collectif bruxellois Nos Restes. La même année, il reçoit le prix de la Communauté Française lors de l’exposition Médiatine. Entre 2009 et 2013, il a publié 5 bandes dessinées (Employé du moi, 5C, Alter comics) et participe régulièrement à divers collectifs. Il est le scénariste et le dessinateur de nombreuses bandes dessinées. Sacha est sa première série d'albums Jeunesse.
Natacha Sicaud est née le 9 septembre 1977 à Jonzac. En 1998, elle obtient son DNAP, option bande dessinée aux Beaux Arts d'Angoulême. Elle poursuit ensuite ses études et obtient en 2001 son DNSEP, option illustration aux Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg. Depuis 1996, elle collabore au fanzine « Lapis-Lazuli ». En 2000, elle participe au « Comix 2000 » chez L'Association, pavé de 2000 pages de bande dessinée. En 2002, elle illustre « Rêve de Chien » chez Nathan. Sa série « Savaneries » pour Glénat J compte désormais six albums.
