The Code: Molding Today's Men of Character

In a world where young men often receive conflicting messages about masculinity, The Code offers a transformative path to adulthood rooted in the ancient wisdom of the samurai. This comprehensive curriculum helps boys move confidently into manhood by teaching them that true self-mastery comes from both embracing one's power and accepting the responsibility that comes with it.

Drawing on the framework of bushidō, The Code guides students through seven essential virtues:

• Rectitude: Making right and just decisions in difficult situations.
• Loyalty: Developing devotion and faithfulness in relationships.
• Honor: Maintaining personal dignity and self-worth.
• Courage: Facing fear to do what is right.
• Honesty: Pursuing sincerity and truth in deeds and words.
• Politeness: Demonstrating genuine respect and empathy for others.
• Benevolence: Acting with a consistent desire to do good for the community.

The curriculum uniquely blends Western and Eastern traditions, pairing Socratic-style discourse to stimulate critical thinking with the ancient practice of shodō (Japanese calligraphy) to promote mindfulness and discipline. Students don't just learn about virtues; they engage with them through case studies, interactive activities, and a final community service project.

Designed by Director Janine Gerzanics, Ph.D., and Co-Creator John Edwards, M.A., these materials---including the Curriculum Guide and Closing Ceremony Handbook---provide everything to lead a successful course marking the start of a life of honor and success.

Culminating in a momentous ceremony, The Code is more than a set of rules; it's a strategy for living nobly in a complex world.

Janine Gerzanics, The Code Director Janine Gerzanics was born in England at a time when learning social skills and manners came naturally. She has however, seen social manners evolve, and is delighted to help parents and students navigate our complex society with The Code. Janine studied for her Ph.D at the University of Southern California and, for over 30 years, has taught in the United States and abroad. In addition to teaching manners workshops and writing social skills curriculum, Janine is also a professor of Literature at West Valley College. She is a manners consultant to businesses, a keynote speaker and author. Janine has two children and lives in Burlingame, CA.

John Edwards, The Code Co-CreatorA writer, creative consultant, and teacher, John had worked with youth of various ages for over 25 years in the classroom, summer camps, and as a guest speaker and lecturer. He has written several books for Disney legacy properties including Frozen and The Incredibles, and almost as many episodes of Tom and Jerry or Warner Bros. As a parent and a teacher in the Bay Area, he has seen a growing need for social skills and a sense of character among our youth. This inspired him to draw upon his creative and educational experience to design The Code to help young men understand their potential and responsibility in today's society. John has two daughters and a son and lives in Pacifica, CA.
