The Code of the Mountains

The Code Of The Mountains by Charles Neville Buck. A Kentucky mountain saga of vendetta and reform, it follows Newt Spooner, a released convict bent on vengeance, and Henry Falkins, a young heir of feudal power. Newt’s return to Troublesome Creek ignites a brutal clan feud with the Falkins, while Minerva Rawlins, a bright daughter of the hills, arrives at a local college and dreams of education. A shifting alliance emerges as Black Pete Spooner, the Deacon, seeks peace by brokering a truce between Spooners and Falkinses, even as Newt’s hunger for retribution drives skirmishes and a brutal plot to kill Henry. The narrative moves from the mountains to the battlefields of the Philippines, where Newt and Henry grow into disciplined soldiers, their earlier enmity tempered by duty. A final reunion on a college campus and a bond between Newt and Minerva seal the arc: from feud and vengeance toward leadership, learning, and a hard-won redemption.
